The Gospel Record According to John

The Holy Spirit has given to us four records of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ while here on earth. The first three: Matthew, Mark and Luke are called the synoptic records as they are similar in the presentation of our Lord’s life. John’s record is rather different in the way the life of Jesus is shown to us. At the end of John’s writing he states very clearly his purpose insetting forth the details he gives: ‘These are written that you may BELIEVE (my emphasis) that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name’ (John 20:31). John presents to us evidence that the Lord Jesus was the Son of God as He claimed to be, the Divine Saviour, the Jewish Messiah promised in the Old Testament.

The evidence is presented to us by a selection of a series of ‘SEVENS’. So we have:

  •     7 SIGNS (miracles) performed by the Lord Jesus
  •     7 SAYINGS centred around the Name of God – ‘I AM’ (Exodus 3:14)
  •     7 SERMONS preached to the Jewish people
  •     7 SPECIAL personal discussions
  •     7 SPEAKERS who testify to the Lord Jesus
  •     7 ‘IF’S’ SERMONS spoken to the disciples before the crucifixion
  • Evidence of the 7 SIGNS

    1. Water turned into wine – John 2:1-11
    2. The nobleman’s son healed – John 4:46-54
    3. The impotent man healed – John 5:1-15
    4. The feeding of the 5000 – John 6:1-14
    5. The storm calmed – John 6:15-21
    6. The blind man given sight – John 9:1-12
    7. The raising of Lazarus – John 11:1-45

    Evidence of the 7 SAYINGS

    1. I AM the Bread of Life – John 6:35,48,51
    2. I AM the Light of the World – John 8:12/9,5
    3. I AM the Door – John 10:9
    4. I AM the Good Shepherd – John 10:11

    6. I AM the True Vine – John 15:1
    7. I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life – John 14:6

In using the title ‘I AM’ our Lord was claiming the Name God gave of Himself to

Moses when he was at the burning bush: ‘I AM WHO I AM’ (Exodus 3:14)

    Evidence of the 7 SERMONS

    1. The equality of the Lord Jesus with the Father – John 5:16-47

    6. I (the Son of Man) and My Father are One – John 10:22-38
    7. The Corn of Wheat – John 12:20-36

Evidence of the 7 SPECIAL personal discussions to:

    5. the blind man – John 9:1-38
    6. Martha – John 11:17-27
    7. the woman taken in adultery – John 8:3-11

Please note that 2 further personal talks took place after the arrest of the Lord Jesus.

    -        to Pilate (John 18:33-38 and John 19:8-11)

    -        to Mary Magdalene (John 20:15-17)

  • Evidence of the 7 SPEAKERS

    1. John the Baptist: ‘”Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”’ – John 1:29, 36
    2. Nathanael: ‘”Rabbi you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel”’ – John 1:49
    3. Nicodemus: ‘”Rabbi we know you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him”’ – John 3:2-3

    6. the blind man: ‘Then he (the blind man) said “Lord I believe!” And he worshipped Him’ – John 9:35-38
    7. Martha: ‘She said to him “Yes Lord I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is come into the world”’ – John 11:27

Evidence of the 7 ‘IF’S’ SERMONS (all in John chapter 14)

    1. ‘IF it were not so I would have told you’ – verse 2
    2. ‘IF I go and prepare a place for you I will come again’ – verse 3
    3. ‘IF you had known Me, you would have known My Father also’ – verse 7
    4. ‘IF you ask anything in My Name, I will do it’ – verse 14
    5. ‘IF you love me, keep my commandments’ – verse 15
    6. ‘IF anyone loves me, he will keep My word’ – verse 23
    7. ‘IF you loved me, you would rejoice because I said I am going to the Father’ – verse 28

A reminder: John wrote his Gospel record that people might BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God and that believing you might have life in His Name (John 20:31). He wrote his first letter or epistle that believers might KNOW that they had eternal life, and that they might continue to believe in the Name of the Son of God (1 John 5:13)
